Tattoo Care 101 – How to Take Care of Your New Ink

Whether you are getting your first tattoo or adding another one to your growing collection, you should know that tattoo is an investment. Just like any other investments, you should know how to take care of it for the long term.

Care for your tattoo is as important as choosing the design and the artist. As long as you go to a reputable tattoo artist, getting one comes with very little health risks. However, that doesn’t mean that you should not be careful with your new skin art. Below are some of the things you need to keep in mind when you have a new tattoo.

Covering Up New Tattoo

Before you can show the world your new ink, you need to wait a couple of days. More often than not, the artist will cover the new tattoo with a thin gauze and bandage. This will keep the skin sterile and help in the healing process.

You can remove the bandage after a couple of hours. However, if the artist uses plastic wrap to cover the tattoo, remove it as soon as you arrive at home. Plastic wrap is bad for the new ink. While it does protect the skin from infections, it doesn’t allow it to breathe.

In the next couple of days, you should make sure that there is nothing rubbing against the new tattoo. If you have a new tattoo on the ankle, then you should not wear socks while healing. If you have it at your lower back, make sure that you wear loose pants to prevent the fabric from rubbing the skin.

Keeping It Clean

It is important to wash your hands before you remove the bandage and each time you touch your new tattoo. To wash your tattoo, you should use a very mild soap. Don’t use a washcloth. Instead of placing it in running water, splash water onto it. It is important that you remove all traces of blood from the area. Dry the skin with the use of a soft cloth or a paper towel.

After you wash the area, place a thin layer of anti-bacterial ointment to prevent infections. You can apply the ointment anytime of the day if the skin becomes tight or dry. The skin must be moist at all times to reduce peeling and scabbing. That way the color of the ink will last longer.

It is not wise to expose the skin to water aside from your daily shower. That means you should not go swimming or soaking in the bath while the skin is still healing. Chlorine can reduce the colors of the tattoo. It is a bad idea to expose your tattoo to the sun. Keep it covered when you go out.

Taking care of a new tattoo is simple. Aside from the tips above, ask the artist for advice on how to care for your new skin art. Taking care of it will ensure that it doesn’t become a health risk, and will heal properly.
